Willamette University students hosted by Colonia Amistad families
The program, called Take-A-Break, places small groups of Willamette University students, staff, and faculty in communities across America to engage in community service and experiential learning. Last year, the students stayed at Colonia Libertad, but had chosen to visit Independence this year. It is the first time that Colonia Libertad has hosted students in their community.
Nicole Vogt, one of the student facilitators for the trip, noted, "Every time I have stayed or interacted with the FHDC community, I have felt more than welcomed! The families living at Colonia Amistad are such incredible people and really strive to make a difference in their community. They have truly enriched the lives of the visiting student groups they have
interacted with."
Among the group of 12 students were 3 students from Tokyo International University, who worked through the language barrier of both English and Spanish to communicate with their families. They agreed that the warmth and generosity of the families was crossed the language barrier.
"I hope that future groups will stay with Colonia Amistad," quoted Megan Cohen, "...and that Willamette University and FHDC will have a lasting connection."
