Meet Jesus...
Jesus Roldan moved to Colonia Amistad in January of 2010 from Mexico. Jesus is 11 years and is currently a fifth grader at Independence Elementary School (IES). Upon arriving to Amistad he immediately became involved in the After School Program. Since enrolling in the after school program Jesus has yet to miss a day. His report card states that he has "excellent work habits and behavior." Jesus came to Independence, Oregon with no English language skills. He has begun speaking and writing in English and is considered one of IES' top English Learner Development (ELD) Students.
Jesus also volunteers in various community activities such as FHDC's Waste Reduction Program (see picture below). He is considered a leader among his peers. When he arrives from school, he knocks on every apartment door to let his peers know the After School Program has begun. Jesus also helps recruit children to participate in the After School Program. He's known for telling new participants, "don't worry, you're in good hands."
